Longhu Mountain Tianshi Mansion is the ancestral seat of the Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) Taoist tradition. Throughout history, the Celestial Masters (Zhang Tianshi lineage) have inherited their position hereditarily, leading the Zhengyi school and establishing it as a major Taoist tradition centered on talismanic practices (fu-lu).

Origin and Development of the Zhengyi School

The Zhengyi school, also known as Orthodox Unity, is primarily rooted in the Longhu tradition. It gradually integrated various Taoist branches, including Shangqing, Lingbao, Qingwei, and Jingming, eventually forming a major talismanic Taoist tradition.

Its founder was Zhang Daoling (the Ancestral Celestial Master) of the Eastern Han Dynasty. His descendants continued the hereditary Celestial Master lineage for over sixty-three generations. During the Yuan Dynasty, the title “Celestial Master” was officially recognized. Under the leadership of Zhang Zongyan, Taoism in southern China was unified, promoting the consolidation of talismanic traditions into the Zhengyi school.

A key milestone in the formation of the Zhengyi school occurred in the 8th year of the Dade era (1304) under Emperor Chengzong of the Yuan Dynasty, when the 38th Celestial Master, Zhang Yucai, was bestowed the title:
“Master of Orthodox Unity, in charge of the talismanic traditions of the Three Mountains.”
